eco wonder


I have been dyeing silk as a summer alternative for sales this season. Seems people don't want to even touch wool when its over 30 outside.
This process never ceases to amaze me. The colour variations from just one pot of onion skins with different metal additives is astounding.
I also soy mordanted some cotton and here are the results. The outlines have a wonderful smokeyness to them.

    Your silks are really amazing. I especially like the piece(s?) the lady is wearing.
    I also love this technique - and it is still very unpredictable to me - or will it always be so?

    It seems that every one I unwrap has it's own little piece of magic happening. These were all done in the same pot of onion skins, put in at various times and with different metals in the centre. The cotton ones actually boiled dry as I thought I;d turned the pot off but hadn't. Luckily we have a safety switch in the shed so I didn't wreck my boiler. I would love to share all this knowledge but this is India's trick so look her up as she does travel around.

    that safety switch sounds like a good trick...i once woke up to the smell of frying eucalyptus having turned a pot down low in the ktichen and fallen asleep

    now i set my wee fire under the pot in the studio and can go to bed [or wander off] reasonably secure that the coals will die down and all will be well

    ain't onion skins fun!
